The Art of Giving: Our Take on Gifting in PR

With the holiday season around the corner, gifting is naturally top of mind. But in PR, “gifting” comes with a conversation worth having.

Ah, the art of gifting.

Sending a beautifully packaged product into the world and watching it land in the hands of the right creator is exciting. It creates visibility, credibility and brand love that traditional advertising can’t manufacture.

We do, however, believe there’s an important distinction between receiving a gift and being asked to do work in exchange for one.

A Gift Should Feel Like a Gift

Product gifting absolutely has a place in PR.

When there are no expectations attached, gifting can be a great way to introduce someone to a brand, build organic relationships and give a product the opportunity to speak for itself. If the recipient genuinely loves it and chooses to share? Amazing. That kind of organic advocacy can be valuable.

Where our stance becomes firmer is when a “gift” comes with expectations: a dedicated post, video, review, event appearance, specific messaging or a deadline.

At that point, we’re asking for a partnership. We believe partnerships should be treated and compensated as such.

Why We Advocate for Fair Compensation

As PR professionals, part of our job is to generate impactful visibility and credibility for our clients. But another equally important part is ensuring that the way a brand shows up in the world reflects its values. The creators, experts and community voices we partner with bring more than a follower count.

They bring trust. They’ve dedicated time building relationships with their audiences, developing their creative skills and earning the credibility that makes their recommendations valuable in the first place.

The Long-Term Value of Paying Partners Fairly

Compensation isn’t a line item in a campaign budget. Done thoughtfully, it can strengthen the entire ecosystem around a brand.

  • Stronger voices. Fair partnerships make it possible to work with diverse creators, experts and advocates.
  • Better quality content. When partners are compensated for their time and creativity, they have the resources to put more thought into storytelling, production and execution.
  • Greater accountability. A formal partnership allows both sides to agree on timelines, deliverables and expectations, creating a smoother experience for everyone involved.
  • More authentic brand relationships. Treating someone as a valued partner rather than a distribution channel lays the foundation for relationships that can grow beyond a single campaign.
  • Stronger brand reputation. The way a company treats the people representing it says something about the brand itself. Fair compensation signals professionalism, respect and an understanding of the value others bring to the table.
  • Long-term advocacy. A positive partnership experience can turn a one-time collaborator into someone who genuinely wants to continue talking about, recommending and supporting the brand.
